Parmi les plus vastes mégalopoles, Kinshasa témoigne d'une urbanisation débridée au cœur du continent africain. De son noyau colonial historique aux banlieues en construction, la ville et ses habitants semblent en perpétuel mouvement. Ce rythme frénétique induit un espace urbain inscrit dans un paysage et un imaginaire identitaire fort, au point de rupture de charge du fleuve Congo.Le livre esquisse la genèse et l'évolution de la capitale actuelle de la République démocratique du Congo qui fut, entre 1923 et 1960, la capitale administrative du Congo belge. Richement illustré, l'ouvrage retrace les étapes de la construction urbaine depuis l'époque préhistorique jusqu'à nos jours. Le lecteur découvre un paysage urbain peu connu, encore marqué par le principe colonial de la ségrégation et une architecture éclectique : des premiers bungalows préfabriqués en bois importés d'Angleterre à l'immeuble résidentiel Art déco de l'entre deux-guerres, de l'architecture publique monumentale et d'immeubles empreints d'un modernisme tropical aux cités indigènes des années 1950, des constructions de l'époque postcoloniale aux réalisations contemporaines de la jeune génération d'architectes congolais. Un ouvrage en forme d'hommage à ceux qui ont construit Kin-la-Belle. L'Inventaire recense, étudie et fait connaître le patrimoine artistique de la France et de l'étranger. Les Images du patrimoine présentent une sélection des plus beaux monuments et œuvres de la région.

Should artists be activists? Is activist art one of an artist’s primary responsibilities or a pointless sideshow on the fringes of serious politics? The philosopher, writer and art historian Lieven de Cauter, Ruben de Roo and Karel Vanhaesebrouck explore this theme in collaboration with other thinkers and doers in his new book Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization. In a time of globalization, populism, hypercapitalism, migration, War on Terror, and global warming, artistic engagement is vital. Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization takes the measure of contemporary activist art. What is the role of art and activism in the polarized, populist society of the spectacle? Art & Activism examines both the criticism of engagement as a mere pose and the need for cultural activism in today’s society. Urban activism and activism by anonymous networks are also investigated. Special attention is devoted to the effects of the War on Terror on activism in practice. The book concludes with a theoretical framework for contemporary activism and an impassioned plea for genuinely political art. Lieven de Cauter, Ruben De Roo and Karel Vanhaesebrouck co-edited Art and Activism in the Age of Globalization.
